Dr. Andy Wu - Associate Professor, Harvard Business School (Strategy Unit)
"Khriseten Bellows is an exceptional scholar and educator in a category of her own. As a former student of hers, I benefited greatly from her commitment to delivering world-class education inside the classroom and mentoring students towards their personal and professional goals outside the classroom. Ms. Bellows' curriculum design reflects the kind of leading-edge experimentation we need to advance the state of experiential learning that is increasingly the best practice today. And she was already making these contributions over a decade ago. She also served as the mentor for new and young teachers in her department. In that role, she encouraged new teachers to create engaging, rigorous, and multicultural curricula to deepen students' learning and connection to the world beyond the insular walls of the school. Outside the classroom, Ms. Bellows engaged with students one-on-one to help them discover themselves and achieve their potential. Recognizing my budding interest in technology, she reached out to me to connect me with an internship opportunity in a technology startup. That experienced transformed my life and led me to my path today as a researcher, teacher, and advisor of technology businesses. It is very likely I would not be doing what I am doing today if not for Ms. Bellows."
Dr. Gillian Osborne - Writer, Educator, Curriculum Specialist
"I write to recommend Khriseten Bellows as an instructor of literature and writing. I have worked closely with Khriseten as a fellow-educator since 2017, when she took over as lead instructor for one of my courses at the Harvard University's “Poetry in America: Whitman and Dickinson,” during a leave of absence. Since then, we have worked together every semester, and several summers, on many college-level English courses, at Harvard and, since 2020, at Arizona State University. The courses we teach are part of a larger, multi-platform, educational initiative, Poetry in America, founded by a Harvard English professor. I have worked with Khriseten on all 5 of the courses we offer, in total covering 400 years of American poetry. The pedagogical work of these courses would not be possible without an enthusiastic and talented team of fellow educators, of which Khriseten has been an important member."
Caitlin Ballotta Rajagopalan - Program Director, Educational Media Innovation Studio
"Khriseten is one of Poetry in America’s most senior teaching team members. She has been with us since our earliest days and has served in both an advisory and an instructional capacity. Khriseten’s immense care for her students shows in everything she does; she is a wonderful mentor, and students of all ages—from high-schoolers, to undergraduates and graduate students, to K-12 teachers—who are enrolled in her sections love working with and learning from her. She is a leader on our team who is always willing to take on extra responsibilities to help us grow and serve students better—whether it involves mentoring aspiring teachers or assisting with program evaluation. Khriseten would be an asset to any organization."
Kayin Patton - Tech Writer and Consultant
"Given that she was once my middle school English teacher, I learned about forty percent of my current vocabulary from Khristen Bellows, or Ms. Bellows as I still call her. Out of all of the words (and the origins of those words), she’s taught my classmates, one sticks out the most about Ms. Bellows: inspirational. She defines the word through her work and embodies it through her actions. So much so, that five of her former students (including myself) from that 8th Grade class have turned their love for writing, cultivated by a transference of passion from teacher to student, into a profession, and all of us would say the same thing....Ms. Bellows is one of (if not THE) most caring educators to exist in this conceivable universe."
Dr. Staci Benak - UCSD instructor
"Though Ms. Bellows coached me during my time as a classroom teacher, it must be said that she was also mentoring me for my unbeknown future role as teacher-leader. Currently, my leadership approach is mirrored to that of Ms. Bellows, where I too foster a partnership with every person I encounter, find every person’s unique assets and skills, and focus on promoting a sense of autonomy and efficacy in order to make change for good. These skills that I now carry are a direct reflection of what I had learned through the mentorship of Ms. Bellows."
Dr. JoAnn Campbell Kilpatrick - K-12 School and Instructional Leadership | Edtech & Innovative Education Models
"Khriseten is a thoughtful and talented educator with the ability to teach at a variety of levels. Her creative, reflective, and caring approach to her work translates into strong relationships with her students. She is skilled at curriculum design, has excellent presentation skills and an approachable presence, and is constantly learning to improve her craft."
Dr. Elisa New - Director, Center for the Public Humanities, Arizona State University Powell M. Cabot Professor of American Literature, Harvard University Director and Host, PBS’s Poetry in America Director, Verse Video Education
“It is with great pleasure that I write to recommend Khriseten Bellows for your organization. Khriseten has held the distinct titles of Senior Educational Consultant and Teaching Fellow for Poetry in America, working with me at Harvard University’s Division of Continuing Education and at Arizona State University for the past thirteen years. Khriseten is a consummate professional, and my organization and I—not to mention the learners we serve—have benefited immensely from her deep love of teaching, developing curricula, and supporting students with a range of abilities. Khriseten has been with my organization, Poetry in America, since its earliest days and has served in both an advisory and an instructional capacity. As a Consultant for Poetry in America course development—and an on-camera guest in a number of our course videos—Khriseten has helped to develop synchronous session curricula for my hybrid online courses at ASU and the Harvard Extension School. These courses reach a highly diverse population of learners, from high-school students seeking college credit, to undergraduate and graduate students, to K-12 teachers seeking professional development, to “lifelong learners” seeking enrichment. It takes a skilled educator to be able to cater to all of these audiences, each with its own set of needs and goals, and I can say with confidence that Khriseten is one such educator. As an instructor, Khriseten’s immense care for her students shows in everything she does. She takes an individualized, skill-based approach to instruction, and, while she has high expectations for her students, she aims to provide them with robust academic support and endless encouragement. She goes above and beyond what is asked of her to ensure that her learners are growing as readers and writers. In turn, Khriseten’s students consistently give her high marks on end-of-semester evaluations, and many ask to be paired with her again in the future. (Indeed, my team receives more requests from students about being matched with Khriseten than with any other member of my twenty-plus-person teaching team.) Dual enrollment facilitators, too, enjoy working with Khriseten in supporting their students: after the pilot run of my national Poetry in America for High Schools program, for instance, one teacher (i.e., dual enrollment facilitator) wrote to the program director to call “dibs” on Khriseten in the future. That teacher has shepherded four groups of students through the program, and each cohort has been taught by Khriseten. Khriseten is a leader on my team who is always willing to take on extra responsibilities to help Poetry in America grow and serve students better. She regularly mentors aspiring educators enrolled in my graduate courses, allowing them to shadow her teaching, and to co-plan and co-teach lessons with her. She also volunteers to assist my team with program evaluation: whether we are conducting focus groups with our instructional staff or enlisting teaching team members to help us examine the efficacy of different assessment types, we have come to rely on Khriseten’s experience and expertise as we develop and improve our courses and programs. Khriseten’s leadership, her empathy, and her dedication to her students and colleagues make her a valuable instructor and team member. She would be an asset to any organization, and we recommend her without reservation for this position.”
